Making Healthy Choices While Grieving

Most people pass through a very difficult time while on a grief journey. The loss of a family member or a loved one sends them into an emotional abyss. This is also the time when funeral details need to be worked out and necessary arrangements made for the final journey of the loved one.

The efforts and energy poured into organizing the funeral arrangements is likely to leave them emotionally and physically exhausted. So much so that they are likely to lose their appetite too. As a result, most people resort to eating poorly when they are grieving.

It is therefore natural to look for easily accessible foods like fast food or any similar option. It’s easier for people to turn to comfort foods like chips, pizzas, ice cream, burgers, pastries etc. This highly calorific and nutrition deficient diet can increase stress and cause depression.

Healthy Eating Is Important: Some Tips

When you choose a healthy diet during the grieving period, it has a positive impact on your energy levels and strength, both of which are necessary to take quick and appropriate decisions about funeral arrangements. Some of the healthy choices while grieving are:

  • Choose non-processed foods like fresh produce, leafy vegetables fruits and nuts – these are packed with proteins and vitamins.
  • Keep your fridge stocked with healthy snacks such as a variety of yogurts, smoothies, cheese, granola bars and comfort foods like soups, puddings, pasta.
  • Eat small portions, frequently and keep yourself well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Avoid caffeinated beverages.

It is critical to maintain a healthy diet during the grieving period to retain your energy and face the funeral proceedings with fortitude, so is the need to plan and store ingredients on a weekly basis. This helps you cook healthy meals without too much hassle.
