Obituary of Michael Robert Mercer
On the 9th day of April 2025, Mike Mercer passed away peacefully surrounded by his family.
Mike was a beloved husband to Barbara, father to Lisa and Jenna, father-in-law to Craig, Mark and Karl, and papa to Taylor (Joey), Jamie (Cory), Jake (Jasmine), Maddie (Johnny) and Emma. He was predeceased by his parents, Valerie and Peter, and is survived by his brother, Rick.
Mike was born on April 6th, 1943 in Sherborne, England. He immigrated to Canada with his grandmother at 6 years old. Mike served honourably in the Canadian Armed Forces. He shared stories from his youth fondly and often. He and his wife started the company Mercer Broadloom and ran it successfully for 20 years. It was a labour of dedication and love. Mike was a proud member of the Oshawa Gun Club, visiting every Wednesday for years. He thoroughly enjoyed passing the hours puttering in his garage in between. Mike owned a trailer on Jack Lake for over 50 years. He loved to spend time fishing, boating to the island, and having a glass of wine on the dock with his friends and family up north. He was always up for dancing to oldies like “The Gambler” or “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” and “Footloose.” Bad knees never stopped him.
Mike loved his family deeply and fiercely, and he showed it proudly. He joked wildly, cried openly, listened intently, encouraged powerfully, and supported fully. He will be sorely missed, affectionately remembered, and very loudly celebrated at every gathering.
The family of Mike Mercer will receive friends at the Wagg Funeral Home, 216 Queen Street in Port Perry (905-985-2171) on Thursday April 17th, 2025 from 10 – 11 a.m. A Service to commemorate his life will be held in the Chapel at 11 a.m.
