Belinda Espley posted a condolence
Sunday, January 24, 2010
I have been introspective all weekend having just learned that my beloved girlfriend from high school has died -- 4 years ago. It has been years since I last spoke to Debbie, having lost her phone number, and not knowing her partner's surname, in one of my many moves. So when I located Carolyn on Facebook last week, I grinned a broad grin and thought "Ah ha! Now I can reconnect with Zeb!" Boy, was I sadly mistaken. Debbie was one of my best friends in High School. We both belonged to the Yearbook Club. In fact, with the addition of John Curl, I think we WERE the Yearbook Club. Zeb was in charge of fundraising (do you remember those monthly sucker sales?). We spent a lot of time in that Yearbook Room on the 3rd floor of PPHS, where we smoked and drank and had many a laugh, skipping class and avoiding the ire of the teachers. Zeb and I also took Drivers Education classes together. W-H-A-T an experience! She used to scare the pants off me - she never quite knew how wide her car was, so overtaking the parked cars became something of a challenge for her. We had to use the Flamingo Buttertart parking lot many times, when Zeb was behind the wheel, to show her how to smoothly turn corners, how to start and stop. My life flew before my eyes quite often when she was driving. I remember her driving straight towards the factory wall, going 30, not acknowledging that maybe she should turn the wheel, that she should maybe slow down - no - STOP - before we smacked into the side of the building! Thank God for that second set of Instructor brakes!!! Mr. Talbot had brown hair when we started the Drivers Ed program, and grey by the time we'd graduated (yes, we BOTH graduated)... ah, such wonderful memories! Zeb was a happy person and her laughter, very infectious. I will miss her dearly. Carolyn, I lost my mother in 2005 and know that I still ache with that grief. No longer being able to pick up the phone to share a laugh. No longer able to turn to her for advice. No longer able to hug her or kiss her. I know how I feel about losing my mother, but I still cannot imagine how you feel about losing your sister, Debbie. This loss makes me appreciate who I have left, and I hope that my sister, Samantha, stays put for many, many years to come. Wishing you all well, but the circumstances would be different. Dear Carolyn and Todd. Please accept our warmest thoughts to you and your family through these unhappy days ahead. Carolyn: I also have lost a sister so the pain ahead of you is well understood by myself. I personally found peace in the thoughts that she is in Heaven now. I hope and trust these same thoughts will be with you through the years to come. To the Ball family, I worked with Debbie many, many years ago at the Prudential office in Richmond Hill. I am shocked and saddened today to read of her sudden passing at such a young age. Debbie was a hard-working lady with a contagious laugh and a warm heart. I remember fondly the night she stayed over at my home because of a snow storm. I also remember travelling with her to Collingwood to attend a company Christmas party. She was a lovely girl, very family oriented. I will hold my memories of her forever, as I know you will. God bless you and help you through this most difficult time. Wendy Steele (aka Brooker)
