Several years ago, Marlene McKay of Willowtree Farm breezed into the Aurora Farmers' Market and Artisan Fair like a breath of fresh spring air. Along with her farm's wide assortment of quality produce, she brought her joie de vivre, gregarious personality, high energy and passion for farming and her family. It was natural that many of her customers became her friends. Marlene and I quickly became friends too, in part because we shared the angst of a cancer diagnosis. She loved my soups and jams and I loved her berries and hugs. Our market will seem so eerily quiet without Marlene's presence. We will all miss her terribly and will never forget her indomitable spirit. We hope that Marlene's family will gain some small measure of comfort from knowing how widely she was loved and admired.

My sincere condolences to Rod and family on their loss of a beloved soul mate, mother and grandmother. As their local councillor for ten years one of the great benefits one receives is to meet the quality people who help enrich the rich diversity and heritage of this Township. Marlene, Rod and their family are such valued citizens. Their passion for the land, their vocation as farmers, and their belief in valuing one's heritage and community, as well as,their faith in a loving benevolent God bodes well for the future. Having experienced the loss of my first wife to the same dreaded disease I relate to the pain you now experience. As Easter people we take comfort in our common belief regardless of one's faith tradition, "Love is stronger than death!"
Pax et bonum (Peace and every good)

"On one's life journey, some of us cross paths with individuals who end up having a unique and special place in our minds for an endless time.
Marlene for me, was one of those blessings.
From our first introduction, Marlene showed caring, kindness, understanding and empathy.
A friendship that resulted in a number of positive memorable situations still vivid in my thoughts today.
Our paths did not cross often as each of us were on a different course in life.
From extended family contacts, some of Marlene's journey was known to me.
My fondness for her was evident.
I consider myself privileged to have had Marlene in a small part of my life.
Gone but not forgotten.
Forever in my heart.
George Bruyn"

To the entire McKay family we extend our deepest sympathies on the loss of such a special lady. I didn't have the opportunity to spend much time with Marlene as an adult, but she is ever present in my memories from childhood. I started working at a young age on the farm picking strawberries, and these are some of my fondest memories. Marlene was such a strong and confidant woman who instilled her sense of pride in work in all whom she came across. She served as a mentor for many young people, myself included, and I think this is a very important part of her legacy. May you find comfort in knowing that she is no longer suffering and can now rest in peace. Sincerely, Amy and Robert Doiron

Part 2
I brought Marlene a pink shawl to add some colour and feminity to her life. I met Marlene a number of years ago at the 5-year reunions of her husband's Aggie university group. She and I always had a special lunch together going off by ourselves. We would do a 5-year catch-up. She was the farm girl and I was the city girl. I feel a loss but know that she enjoyed her life right up to the end and had the phone by her side to talk to anybody who called. God called her and she rose to be by his side. My Marlene's family have peace. Bob and I will pray for everyone including her friends, neighbours and all those around her that helped her live her life to the fullest.

Part # 1
We were able to visit Rod and Marlene at the end of March and I am certainly glad that we did. But for Marlene confined in an adjustable chair and in an incline position she had a peppy spirit. She was looking forward to an Easter dinner and Rob had been cutting up potatoes. The rest of the family were bringing over the much anticipated meal. This was the older, tired looking Marlene with a sense of life changing around her and not wanting any further treatments. She had had enough. She was going with the flow. It seemed fitting that she was in the farm house that she enjoyed surrounded by her family and the joyful memories she had. Her pain was being handled by medication she told me.

I am a neighbour of Len & Joan, Stacey & family. This is one of the most beautiful stories I have read in an obituary and what a wonderful life she created. I also grew up in Bethel and can remember picking strawberries every summer with my parents. Never will any ever compare to Misuida's berries. I am so sorry for your family's loss.

Jack and I knew Marlene from the farmers markets.First impression-this woman knows how to work! While listening to a conversation with another vendor we got a look at Marlene's wicked sense of humor.
Vendor-look a the mess left here,Marlene do you have a broom?
Marlene, only the one I flew in on!
Marlene also shared her love of her man.
Denise;Marlene you have raised a very kind young man in Jordan. When I was at the farm I was having some truck troubles and without asking Jordan showed up to help.
Marlene He is a farm boy that is the way we are.You what to know who is kindness itself? My Rod!
With a smile she went back to her booth. We had no idea Marlene was battling cancer.
