Obituary of Jane Ellen Castel-Vanderburgh

Jane (nee Faris) was born in Muncie, Indiana in 1933. After her early years in Muncie and Washington, Jane moved with her mother, Martha Llewellyn Jewett and step-father, George Jewett to Leaside, ON. She attended Leaside High School where she made many lifelong friends. Jane acquired an 'A.R.C.T.' in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music and a 'Licentiate in Music' from McGill University. She was an inspirational music teacher for her many students. Jane was a recognized Art History professor specializing in 17th-20th century sculpture having earned an honours degree in Art History (York University), a Masters in Art History (U of T) and a French doctorate in Art History (l'Universite de Toulouse-le- Mirail, France). As a professor, Jane's Art History lectures were enhanced by her extensive travel experiences and passion for photography. Her multi-media approach was unique and highly acclaimed by her students, many of whom became life long friends. She taught 15 years at OCAD and also gave lectures @ McLaughlin Art Gallery, York University, Trent University, Sir Sandford Fleming and Durham colleges. She also gave guest lectures at the Universite de Montreal, Marco Island Art League and Venice Art Center in Florida. Her extensive excursions throughout Canada, United States, Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa, Russia and Asia gave opportunity for Jane to be versed in French, German, Italian & Spanish. Over her lifetime Jane lived in Montreal, Racine, Schomberg, Toronto, Seagrave, Peterborough and Sarasota, Florida (where she earned her Real Estate license). For the last 17 years, she and Ray have resided on Drag Lake in Haliburton, Ontario. Jane leaves behind her children Christopher (Dawn), Maria (Thomas) and Marc (Gillian), her step-children - Anthony (Leslie), Daryl (Linda), Adam (Michele) and Gillian (Marc) and grandchildren - Jacqueline, Jean-Paul, Tommy, Allie, Stephane, Nicholas, Sophie, Adam, Jaime and Dana. She will also be remembered by her first husband, Jean Castel (Ann). Jane will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was a loving wife, enthusiastic companion and friend to her husband, Ray Vanderburgh. Jane always had a twinkle in her eye, especially at 5:00 PM!
