In my opinion, my grandma lived an extraordinary life. You won't find her in history books or in google searches winning music awards or discovering cures. You will find out however, that her and my grandpa were stars of the Scugog local paper more than once for their very long lives and marriage - 78yr anniversary before grandpa passed on his way to his 101st birthday. It was really only a matter of time before grandma decided to join him. She turned 99 in April. She passed away this morning.... If you'd asked me two/three years ago, I would have thought grandma would have made 100... because for the longest time, we got to take her for granted. She was slower, sure, but still walking and quick witted when rested and I still looked up to her. She was a powerhouse. In retirement she led pool weight classes and did line dancing in a mini skirt and cowboy boots! She raised 6 boys and an adopted daughter on a farm and then later helped to run a successful award winning business.
My grandma was smart! She worked hard. She cooked huge meals for big family get together-s. Some of us remember the choc chip cookies, some the cherry chews. She was adventurous - they traveled. She embraced every new stage of life - think about what her generation saw and adapted to... mind blown!!! Cars and telephones were brand new!? Commercial flight - what?? Women had just earned the right to vote when she was 2 - think about the progress she got to see and the limitations she faced as a woman and then I put that in perspective of what she accomplished - seriously, mind blown!! WW1 had just ended so they lived through WW2 as young adults raising a family. My grandma took care of 3 little boys before my grandpa returned from war - he didn't meet my dad until he was 2 because he was overseas. (they clearly had some fun when he was on leave ️ lol) Those are backwards snippets of memories/thoughts/pride that go through my mind as I got the news today.. repeats of things I've thought about at various milestones my grandparents reached over the past couple decades. It's a long post yes... but she was 99 and my last living grandparent and she deserves it. xoxo
I'm very aware of how lucky our family is to have been able to witness and be a part of their lives. My dad's side - old age.... it's just old age.... and time for a rest after a full life. We as a family are lucky and we are fine... but we will miss knowing she's here. (I love that she brought you a monarch today Michelle) On behalf of her grandchildren, RIP grandma. You were a role model and an incredible woman. We love you, Gayle xo
