Dad, I am so heartbroken you are not here, it still doesn't feel real, I can't call and tell you about my day or what's going on at the house, or office. I'm not able to hear your unsolicited advise on my trucks or how I need to make sure my alarms are working properly or if I put too much grass seed that its not good for the lawn. I had recently sent you a picture of the back yard, trying to show you the snow on the trees and how pretty it looked and you said where is your barbecue cover lol and I thought yup that's dad. My heart aches knowing I cant ask you questions like what I need to do with my jeep in the spring time, or call you when Gav or B are being a pain in the butt. You always had this way of never agreeing or picking sides but it always felt like you where on my side. I want to be able to come up to Port and see you standing in the driveway or garage puttering around "fixing" something, yelling to Sam and I, hey girls what's happening!
I guess we will all have to live without you I just don't know how we will.
Love your favorite daughter :)

Johanna, Barry, Jacqueline and family,
We are so very saddened to learn of Barry's passing. He - like your entire family - welcomed us with kindness when we became neighbours a few years ago. His love of life, of community and especially family was clear.
His love for his grand kids was a beautiful thing; love how involved he was with their lives. We enjoyed listening to the games and laughter out on the lake all those summer days. We suspect the biggest kid, having the best time was Barry himself!
Barry will live forever in your hearts, in his grandchildrens' hearts and I suspect most people he came in contact with. Cherish those memories and know you are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

I LEARNED A VERY IMPORTANT LIFE LESSON FROM MY FRIEND BARRY. HE TOLD ME, WHEN LIFE THREW ME A CURVE, THAT YOU DON'T LET IT GET YOU DOWN BUT YOU PULL YOURSELF UP BY YOUR BOOT STRAPS AND GET BACK IN THE GAME. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT.
I WOULD LIKE TO QUOTE A FAMOUS IRISH PROVERB " THERE ARE WOODEN SHIPS, THERE ARE SAILING SHIPS, THERE ARE SHIPS THAT SAIL ALL THE SEAS, BUT THE BEST SHIPS ARE FRIENDSHIPS AND MAY THEY ALWAYS BE.
GOD BLESS MY FRIEND BARRY. SINCERE CONDOLENCES RICK ROWE

Saddened to learn that another of the really good guys has left ‘the group’: ‘the group’ being an exceptionally productive and always-fun-to-work-with bunch of guys and ladies which Ontario Blue Cross was fortunate to have working together — and of which Barry was a founding and integral member.
Fond memories of Barry and what were truly “the good ol’ days”.

My heart is very heavy and breaks for all of you. Not only was Barry a caring, kind, funny, honest and empathetic boss, Barry's work ethic was contagious, I recall that one day he actually shocked me when he said to me "I can help the staff with the work", I thought he was actually joking as it is rare to me for a boss to volunteer to help with the day to day stuff, as other people have already said " Barry was a team player".
I was also proud to call Barry my friend. Barry treated us like family and even welcomed us in his home many times. I often said to him, "we are lifer's", after working with him for almost the last 20 years, he knew I was telling him the truth, we are not going anywhere, he was stuck with us! Barry took the time to share his knowledge with me time and time again, and that is one of the many things about Barry that I will never forget and will always appreciate.
I am sure that every now and then, I will still hear his voice giving me a "suggestion" on how things should be done or I may think to myself, "what would Barry do in this case"?
Barry, a good man taken from us too soon.
BIG hugs,
Love,
Karen

Like you, I am in shock. The year was awful but the ending to it with Barry's demise makes it horrific.
I extend my deepest condolences to the family.
My favorite memory of Barry is from Calgary. We were at a convention and the entertainment was the mechanical bull. Entertainment became competition. All participants had been thrown off the bull except Barry and myself. Needless to say neither one of us would concede. The host, evaluating these two idiots shut down the machine leaving Barry and myself in a tie.
The next morning after flying back from Calgary I could hardly get out of bed. I phoned Barry in Whitby you see how he was feeling. He was out...curling. I couldn't walk!!!
Damn...he won!!

Barry was my boss when we both worked at Ontario Blue Cross in the mid 80's, he being the manager of the company's 'Corporate Sales Department.' By that juncture in my career I had worked in sales for about 7 years, having at best, mediocre success. That is, until I started working for Barry. Barry was the first good manager I had and maybe the best I ever had in my 40 plus years in the employee benefits industry.
He realized, without grandstanding about it, that the best successes are team successes. If in his team of 6, one of us lost a client, we would all share in that loss and if one of us gained a client we would all shared in that win. He knew that a sales team made up of individual salespersons competing against each other to succeed, would ultimately fail, because of the rancour and mistrust that competition would create among them.
Barry didn't work that way, he treated us all as teammates, each of us having something unique to bring to the table. As a result the good will among us was unbelievable! Rather than a sales department who were suspicious of each other, we learned to trust and support each other. Since we were looking after major corporations like General Motors and McDonnell Douglas, that team mentality was a huge to our success!
The other thing Barry taught me was that: 'regardless of what the underwriters are telling you, there is always 3%.' Barry wasn't cut-throat, but he had this ability to see hidden excess charges. If the numbers were fair, he'd be the first to support them, but when they weren't, he had a way of negotiating fair rates where nobody lost face.
After I left Blue Cross to work in the family insurance agency (Deacon Insurance Agencies Limited), I reconnected with Barry after he and Jim set up Special Benefits. Mostly we'd see each other on the concourse level of Toronto's Downtown 'Path.' He was ever up beat, always giving me the latest on his family and occasionally a passing remark about work. I don't think I even knew what lacrosse was until I heard Barry waxing poetic about his son Gavin's achievements.
I share with you his family the sense of great loss you must be feeling and wish you God's peace through this time of mourning.
John Deacon

Thank you JoAnne! Praying for the 6 of you.
Though I may have only seen Barry a dozen times after our time together at Blue Cross, I remember him with such fondness and admiration. I smile to think of he and Jim Domanski starting Special Benefits together. They were truly the odd couple a.k.a. Oscar and Felix, with Jim the exact one, the detail one and Barry the free spirit and inspiration. I am so glad that what the two of them started, lives on with the involvement of your 3 children!
