Colleen
I am so sorry to hear about Robert. I remember him well from high school. He was quiet, polite and had a great sense of humour. I have lost contact of many of my school mates but Robert’s name reoccurred when Colin and Jenn were dating. I was fortunate to have a visit with Colleen and Robert at Colin and Jenn’s wedding.
I know of his love for the farm, and how he has passed that love and appreciation of that life down to his children, and now to your grandchildren.
My hugs to you Colleen and to the Smith family.
It was far too early to have to say Goodbye.

Living near the Smith farm has many privileges as a neighbour and many memories have been created for our family. When I first moved In 22 years ago after I met Rob and Colleen I would go to the barn with the dog and ask a million questions about dairy farming and he answered all of them all the time. His passion was evident. My children were able to experience some farm chores from time to time and after rock picking for a few hours gained a whole new appreciation for farm work. Personally I got to see Rob everyday walking my dog and usually twice or three times a day as he was always working or going by on the tractor. Some mornings we talked about different things and other days we simply waved. Some talks could be minutes or up to an hour depending on the topic. Our family was very fortunate to have known Rob and will miss him, his conversations, laughter and the sound of him working outside. Our deepest sympathies to the entire family. - Michelle, Vince, Jack and Nolan

I had the pleasure of knowing Robert since 1980, as my father Wells used to live around the corner from his farm. We would engage in countless chats involving agriculture, the dairy industry, sports, and who’s in charge. Our conversation would either end with, “we’ll see” or “good luck to you”. Robert had a brilliant mind, he could remember a meeting 25 years ago, what was discussed, and what the person was wearing. He could also calculate numbers in his head without using a calculator.
Robert always had time to be a friend, I have never seen him angry and he was there for me when needed. He loved his family and was certainly proud of their accomplishments.
A true soul is gone but never forgotten.

Rob was an amazing man. He introduced my daughter to farm life. Then 4H, Royal, to choring before school for her high school co-op placement. Then along the way she met her person and they married and now have 3 children. Their first born shared a birthday with Rob. He is the reason my daughter is the person she is today. A dairy farm wife with children doing the same. My son and daughter had some great memories at Rob’s farm. He will be missed.

It was at the monthly RTO (retired teachers of Ontario) Port Perry Tim Horton’s conversation over coffee meeting the news was broken by his friends about Robert’s sudden passing. Memories were quickly shared about Robert’s influence on their lives and favourite moments of personal encounter.
It helped recall Robert’s influence on moi. It began when I made the life changing decision to enter the world of Scugog Township Municipal politics with the support of my nine year old granddaughter as my campaign manager in the 2000 election . Having recently retired from the world of education we knew we were entering an arena of which I knew very little including the political boundaries of Ward 1 and it’s bio regions. Robert and Colleen along with the Christie, Hunter families, as well as, others took me under their wings and open my eyes to the importance of our agricultural sector to our local economy, heritage and valued way of life.
In one of encounters with Robert he challenged/invited me to a hands on co op at his dairy farm with the bell ringing at 6:30 am. We made it through the morning and received one of those warm smiles of acceptance from Robert along with increased knowledge about the dairy industry and what it takes to be a master dairy farmer as Robert was.
We send our heartfelt condolences and prayers to Colleen and family. We are at all times the sum of relationships. Scugog has lost a son and a man of compassion. Those whom we have loved and lost are no longer where they were before but wherever we go.
