Differences Between Protestant And Catholic Funeral Customs

Some notable differences include the following:

The Rituals

Protestant funerals are simpler and less ritualistic than Catholic ones and:

  • They usually take place in the church, with a religious leader or pastor conducting the ceremony
  • The deceased's family and friends may read scripture or give eulogies, and hymns are often sung
  • The focus is on celebrating the life of the deceased and their journey to heaven
  • The casket is usually closed, and flowers are placed on top
  • There is no requirement for the family to have a wake or visitation before the funeral service.

Catholic funerals, on the other hand, are more elaborate and ritualistic and:

  • The funeral is typically held in the church, with a priest conducting the ceremony
  • The casket is often open, and mourners may touch or kiss the deceased as a sign of respect
  • There is usually a wake or visitation before the funeral service, where family and friends can pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.
  • The funeral service is often longer than a Protestant service, with a focus on praying for the soul of the deceased and their journey to heaven.

Cremation In Protestant And Catholic Funerals

While cremation is becoming more popular among Protestants, it is still frowned upon by many Catholics, who believe in the sanctity of the body and that it should be buried intact. Catholics who choose cremation may have a funeral mass before the cremation, and the ashes are usually buried in a cemetery or columbarium.

The Dress Code

The dress code is another significant difference between Protestant and Catholic funerals:

  • Protestants tend to wear darker, more conservative clothing, but there are no strict rules on what to wear.
  • Catholics often wear black to the funeral service, symbolizing mourning, but may also wear white, especially if the deceased was a child or young adult. In some Catholic cultures, mourners may also wear a black armband or a pin with a picture of the deceased.

Understanding these differences can help individuals respect and honor the deceased and their family's wishes during a funeral service.
