Memorial Service Ideas for Families Who Choose Cremation

Cremation doesn’t limit the options available to you when it comes to planning and overseeing your funeral service. Many people still maintain traditional services, simply tweaked to accommodate an urn over a casket, while others will embrace the versatility that cremation allows.

Scattering & Burial

In addition to more traditional services, those who opt for cremation often choose to scattertheir loved one’s ashes in a separate, more personal ceremony. This is subject to some restrictions, so it’s always worth looking into the by-laws where you live, just in case. It is also worth mentioning here that the Catholic Church has also forbidden ashes to be scattered by its adherents, limiting your options if you hope to follow Catholic doctrine.

Church doctrine aside, scattering ashes allows you to pick and choose your favourite spot, with a lot of people picking an area that was meaningful to the deceased. On top of this, burying urns is quite popular, with people picking (legal) areas that the deceased enjoyed visiting to bury their ashes. These can include some public spaces or even your own backyard.

Choosing Your Final Resting Place

Urns can also be placed on display in a sacred place, such as a tomb, crypt, or mausoleum, to be visited at will by surviving family and friends. In addition to this, a mantlepiece or other prominent location is considered to be a tradition to many people who prefer the idea of cremation. Bringing friends and family together for scattering or burying ashes makes for a poignant memorial service in itself, with placing the urn in its final resting place being just as fitting when it comes to memorializing the moment.

Additional Ideas

More unique memorials include creating an artificial coral reef or compressing your loved one’s ashes into a diamond. There are even options that include blasting your loved ones ashes into the sky with the aid of fireworks, with one company even creating custom-blown glass objects with the ashes mixed in. The possibilities really are endless and there are many unique memorials available to those who choose cremation. Whatever you choose, we’re here to help you through the decision and are happy to offer further ideas or help you brainstorm further.
