4 Funeral Etiquette Tips You Need to Know

Funerals can be quite difficult for everyone involved. The decedent’s friends and family members are in mourning during this period and may feel more grieved or hurt at any perceived slight. This is why it’s important that you keep their feelings in view and ensure that none of your actions offends them when you are attending the funeral. We at Wagg Funeral Home recommend these 4 etiquette tips to follow:

1. Be punctual

Make it a point to arrive at the funeral at least 10-15 minutes before the scheduled time. A late arrival will only disrupt the ceremony. When you arrive a little early, you will be able to find a seat and interact with the family before the service begins. If you are delayed, walk-in quietly and look for a seat in one of the back rows.

2. Pay attention to your attire

Follow a formal dress code and refrain from wearing brightly colored clothing. It’s best to stick to and black or grey attire.

3. Consider your words carefully

Most people tend to stumble over their words and they aren’t aware of how they should offer condolences. Sometimes they end up saying things that are hurtful to the family. You don’t have to say much and simple, sincere words of consolation are enough.

4. Switch off your cell phone

Either switch your cell phone off or turn it to silent mode before entering the funeral home. Do not keep checking your phone for messages or even excuse yourself to attend to a call unless it’s a genuine emergency.
