The aftermath of a suicide can be a devastating and traumatic experience for those left behind, and we at Wagg Funeral Home see this firsthand in our line of business. It can be challenging to know where to turn for help and find support services available after a suicide.

Range of Support Services Available After A Suicide

Fortunately, many support services are available in Ontario to help those impacted by suicide. Let's look at some options:

  • It is essential to seek help from a qualified mental health professional. They can provide counseling and therapy to help individuals and families cope with the emotional and psychological effects of suicide. Some therapists specialize in grief and bereavement counseling and can provide specific support in dealing with the loss of a loved one to suicide.
  • There are many support groups and organizations available for those affected by suicide in Ontario. Mental health professionals run some of these groups, while others are peer-led and facilitated by individuals personally affected by suicide.
  • The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) offers various support services for those affected by suicide in Ontario. Their Bereavement Support Groups are specifically designed to provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals who have lost a loved one to suicide.
  • Another organization that provides support services for those affected by suicide is Survivors of Suicide Loss (SOS). SOS is a peer-led support group that provides emotional support, education, and resources to individuals who have lost a loved one to suicide. Their support groups are free and open to anyone touched by suicide.
  • The Distress Centers of Greater Toronto provides crisis support and suicide prevention services to those in need. They offer a 24-hour crisis line and online and text-based support. In addition to their crisis services, they offer bereavement support groups and counseling services for those who have lost a loved one to suicide.
  • The Ontario Association for Suicide Prevention (OASP) is another organization that offers support services and resources for those impacted by suicide. They provide education and training on suicide prevention and a directory of suicide prevention services and resources in Ontario.

It is important to note that there are many support services available after a suicide, and this is by no means an exhaustive list. If you or someone you know has been affected by suicide, it is vital to reach out and seek help.
