3 Tips to Help a Friend through the Grieving Process

No one wants to sit back and watch their friend or loved one go through the grieving process alone. They want to offer as much support and comfort as they can in order to help their friend recover from a personal tragedy. Unfortunately, most people are insecure about their ability to offer comfort. Here are some tips that can help you find the best way to comfort your friend.

1. It’s Not About You

Everyone has different ways of dealing with grief; some people may want to spend time alone and away from crowds while others need a friend to talk to. It’s important to realize that everyone will recover at their own pace; and you need to give them their space.

2. Understand the Stages of Grief

There are five stages of grief and most grieving individuals will go through all of them before they have fully recovered. This is a natural and healthy process and people will take their time going through it. Take time to understand which stage of grief your friend is in. The stages of grief are known to go in this order: denial, bargaining, anger, depression, and acceptance. By knowing these stages, you can come up with good ways to help them based on their current mental state.

3. Don’t Tell Them They’re Strong

Everyone goes through grief, even if they don’t outwardly show it. If your friend appears stoic and controlled, don’t praise their strength. They’re suppressing their need and desire to grieve and trying to stay strong for their loved ones. Offer them a safe place to unwind and grieve.
